Not surprisingly, Sphero sees promise in the military and emergency response field. The demand for militarised robotisation is certainly there: the US is actively testing Boston Dynamics’ Spot robot to regulate public order, and the British military is using robots to defuse bombs. In addition, Sphero admitted that making toys is not that profitable. In 2018, the company had to cut a significant number of jobs after a disappointing sales season and stopped producing Disney’s licensed bots, BB-8 and R2-D2.
