Ultra-precise model shows Titanic wreckage without the water column above it

The BBC has released the first part of a major new investigation into the history of the Titanic, which focuses on the scientific and historical aspects of the famous disaster. To this end, an unprecedented amount of footage and 3D scans of the wreckage were taken last summer. The three-dimensional model built on the basis of these scans makes it possible to study the remains of the Titanic as if it had been lifted from the depths of the sea and transported to the museum in its entirety.

The information was collected by Magellan Ltd. and Atlantic Productions, the former specialising in deep-sea mapping and the latter producing documentaries. Using robotic underwater cameras, 700,000 images were taken during 200 hours of work. The detail of the 3D model is such that viewers can even see the nameplates and serial numbers on the interior of the cabins.
