Construction begins on a 20,000-person floating city in the Maldives

Nearby coral reefs will act as natural breakwaters, minimising the sensation of rocking. Most of the electricity will come from solar panels. Wastewater is planned to be treated and used as fertiliser for plants. Instead of traditional air conditioning, houses and buildings will be cooled by water from the depths of the Indian Ocean.

Prices here are not so exorbitant: a studio is about $150,000 and a family cottage is about $250,000. It is expected that the city will receive its first residents in early 2024, and the entire project will be completed by 2027.
